It doesn’t hit the United States until Wednesday, but “Godzilla vs. Kong” opened internationally this past Thursday and the box-office responded to having a real tentpole film back in cinemas at long last.
In China alone, the movie pulled in a $70 million debut – the biggest premiere for a foreign title in both 2020 and 2021, and an 82% market share. That’s well above its nearest rival “Tenet” which debuted to $30 million in August last year.
Globally the film snagged $121.8 million from 38 global markets, and topped in all markets where it released. In Australia alone, the movie in its opening weekend outgrossed the entire local gross total of the previous entry “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”.
