HBO is reportedly planning to start production on July 5th on the live-action series adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game series “The Last of Us”.

Shooting will kick off in Calgary, Alberta and production is expected to be wrapped by next year – specifically June 8th 2022. That suggests the series won’t premiere until the last quarter of 2022 at the earliest, and quite possibly 2023.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are taking on the leading roles of Joel and Ellie, respectively, in the series with the first adaptation to be a direct adaptation of the first game which is regularly considered one of the greatest video games ever made.

The story follows the hardened survivors – an older man and a young girl – on their journey through a radically transformed world twenty years after an infectious fungal pandemic ravaged the course of humanity.

Kantermir Balagov (“Beanpole”) is attached to direct the pilot episode while “Chernobyl” producers Craig Mazin and Johan Renck will executive produce.
