Having led the English-language remakes of Japanese horror hit “The Ring” and French hit “Funny Games,” Naomi Watts is adding another foreign horror film redux to her belt.
Watts is set to star in and executive produce the English-language remake of Austrian 2014 psychological thriller “Goodnight Mommy” at Amazon Studios, Animal Kingdom and Playtime.
The Austrian entry for the best foreign-language film at the Academy Awards that year, the original follows twin brothers who, when sent to stay with their mother, are surprised to find her swathed in bandages from a recent procedure.
As her behaviour grows increasingly erratic and unusual, they become convinced she is an imposter and suspicion sets off a roller-coaster of emotional mind games and misunderstandings – ending with irreparable and heartbreaking consequences.
Matt Sobel (“Take Me To The River”) is directing from a script by Kyle Warren. David Kaplan, Joshua Astrachan, Valery Guibal and Nicolas Brigaud-Robert are producing.
