Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer (“Arrival”), writer/producer Christine Boylan (“Constantine”), and production company Hivemind (“The Expanse,” “The Witcher”) are all teaming up to develop a shared universe franchise based on “The World of Darkness” role-playing tabletop and video game franchise.

Paradox Interactive, who has controlled the rights to the franchise since 2015, is also onboard. “World of Darkness” launched in 1991 with “Vampire: The Masquerade” and expanded to titles like “Werewolf: The Apocalypse,” and “Hunter: The Reckoning”. The games spawned novels, comics, VR experiences, board games, card games and video games.

The franchise features monsters as the protagonists, and earned praise for incorporation of complicated themes and making heroes out of outsiders – deliberately and unapologetically inclusive and diverse. Heisserer is in the news right now for his role as showrunner on Netflix’s just launched fantasy series “Shadow and Bone” based on Leigh Bardugo’s novels.
