MGM-backed cabler Epix has handed out a straight-to-series order for an eight-episode western drama about Billy the Kid.

The project hails from “Elizabeth” scribe turned “The Tudors” and “Vikings” creator Michael Hirst and is set to begin production in June in Calgary.

The project is dubbed an epic romantic adventure based on the life of Billy the Kid (aka William H. Bonney) from his humble Irish roots to his early days as a cowboy on the American frontier to his pivotal role in the Lincoln County War and beyond.

Otto Bathurst (“Halo,” “Black Mirror”) will direct the first two episodes with Viaplay, Epix Studios and MGM International Television Productions producing.
