There were a lot of new films arriving in cinemas and on streaming on Friday, but not a lot of interest from audiences willing to brave cinemas to see them.
Hopes were “Spiral: From The Book of Saw” would score up to $15 million, and while it did come first it underwhelmed at just $8.7 million for the three days. To put that in comparison even the worst opening “Saw” film to date, “Saw VI,” still managed to snag over $14 million in its opening weekend.
The Angelina Jolie western “Those Who Wish Me Dead” meanwhile opened to just $2.8 million, though Warners was pushing this more for its HBO Max release than its theatrical one like it did for last month’s “Mortal Kombat”.
Zack Snyder’s zombie heist movie “Army of the Dead” also fell below projections despite good reviews. Hopes were a $1.5-2 million bow, it made just $780,000. Still that apparently marks the biggest theatrical opening for a Netflix movie to date.
