Michelle Williams Is Henry VIII’s Last Wife

Michelle Williams has been set to play Catherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives, in “Mariner of the Mountains” filmmaker Karim Ainouz’s English-language debut film “Firebrand”.

The project aims to reimagine a ‘period’ film, turning it into a psychological horror film set in the Tudor court and a story of intrigue, agency and survival.

While Henry’s second wife Anne Boleyn and third wife Jane Seymour are the focus of multiple films and shows, Catherine Parr has seen only a few screen incarnations.

Deborah Kerr played her in 1970’s “Young Bess,” Rosalie Crutchley was her in two BBC dramas that decade, and more recently (and arguably most faithfully) Joely Richardson portrayed her in the fourth and final season of Showtime’s “The Tudors” in 2010.

Parr herself outlived Henry and to this day remains the most-married English queen, was influential in allowing Henry’s daughters Mary and Elizabeth to become queens, and was the first woman to publish under her own name in English in England.

Previously titled “A Virtuous Woman,” the project is set to begin filming in the UK early next year and hails from “Tell It to the Bees” scribes Henrietta and Jessica Ashworth. Gabrielle Tana (“Philomena,” “The Dig”) will produce.
