AMC+ has premiered the official trailer for the dark period ice-whaling drama series “The North Water” starring Colin Farrell, Jack O’Connell and Stephen Graham.

Based on the Man Booker Prize long-listed novel by Ian McGuire, the five-part series tells the story of Patrick Sumner (O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic in the late 1850s.

The ferocity of the elements, however, is matched by the violence of his crewmates like Drax (Farrell), a harpooner and a brutal force of nature. As the true purpose of the expedition becomes clear, a confrontation between the two men erupts – taking them on a journey far beyond the safe moorings of civilization.

The project hails from celebrated “45 Years,” “Lean on Pete” and “Weekend” director Andrew Haigh and the series shot 81 degrees north at the tip of the Svalbard Archipelago in the Arctic – the furthest north a drama series has ever filmed.

Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman executive produce the series which will premiere in the U.S. on Thursday July 15th via the AMC+ service and continue through August 12th. It will debut in the UK on BBC Two this Fall.
