Netflix has released the first trailer for the Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum-produced documentary “Pray Away” about the infamous ‘conversion therapy’ movement tackled in recent films like “Boy Erased” and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post”.
The Kristine Stolakis-directed film chronicles the rise and fall of Exodus International, a group founded in the 1970s by five members of an evangelical church that became the largest and most controversial conversion therapy organization in the world.
The group claimed gay people could become straight if they “pray away” their homosexuality. The leaders however struggled with a secret: their own ‘same-sex attractions’ never went away. After years as Christian superstars in the religious right, many of these men and women have come out as LGBTQ and disavowed the very movement they helped start.
The doco focuses on the dramatic journeys of these former conversion therapy leaders, current members, and a survivor. The film premiered at the recent Tribeca Film Festival and will launch on the service on August 3rd.
