A dream team of HBO, A24, director Park Chan-wook, and actor/producer Robert Downey Jr. are all teaming up for a new drama series adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Sympathizer” for HBO Max.
The story centers on an unnamed captain in the South Vietnamese army who is secretly a communist and spy for the Viet Cong.
He leaves Saigon for Southern California in 1975, where he becomes enmeshed in the exile community and serves as a cultural adviser to an American film about the war.
He is later recruited to return to Vietnam for a raid on the communists. A worldwide search is now underway for the lead actor with the cast to be predominantly Vietnamese.
Downey will play multiple supporting roles in the series – each representing a different part of the American establishment. One is an up-and-coming Congressman from Orange County, one is a CIA officer, and one is the director of the movie on which the lead character works.
“Oldboy,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Stoker” director Park Chan-wook will helm the entire series and will executive produce alongside Downey, Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell, Niv Fichman, Kim Ly and Don McKellar. Park and McKellar will serve as showrunners. Rhombus Media, Cinetic Media and Moho Film are also onboard.
