Amazon has handed out an order for a six-episode limited series based on Neil Gaiman’s 2005 fantasy novel “Anansi Boys”.
The story follows Charlie Nancy, a young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father. But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that his father was Anansi: trickster god of stories.
He also learns that he has a brother. Now his brother, Spider, is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting but also making it a lot more dangerous.
While the series revolves around the character of Mr. Nancy played by Orlando Jones in Starz’s recently cancelled “American Gods” series, this is not a spin-off or sequel/prequel to that series. Jones, who was fired from ‘Gods’ during that show’s infamously troubled second season, is not involved in ‘Anansi’ and ‘Gods’ production company Fremantle is also not involved.
Gaiman and Douglas Mackinnon (“Good Omens”) will reunite on the project as co-showrunners. Gaiman, Lenny Henry, Arvind Ethan David, Kara Smith and Racheal Ofori will serve as writers while Hanelle M. Culpepper (“Star Trek: Picard”) helms the pilot.
Production is slated to begin later this year in Scotland with casting already underway.
