For a few years there has been talk of a “Die Hard” prequel being in the works – a film that would focus on a young John McClane in the 1970s well before the events of the first movie.
Titled “McClane,” the last report on the project was back in 2018 when it looked like the film could adopt a “Godfather Part II” structure with flashbacks to young McClane and modern scenes with Bruce Willis.
So why haven’t we heard anything more about it? Because it’s dead according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura who tells Polygon:
“Yeah, no, It’s not happening. But what was really interesting was we actually came up with an idea to do it. It was a project that wasn’t Die Hard that then, eventually, shifted over to Die Hard. What was interesting about our idea was it allowed you the ability to meet the young John McClane and use Bruce. So it was really interesting in that way. So you sort of got to see both versions of him.”
