Nicholas Hoult has been set to star as the title character in “Renfield,” Universal Pictures and Skybound Entertainment’s upcoming feature about Dracula’s infamous insane acolyte.
Filmmaker Chris McKay (“The Tomorrow War,” “The LEGO Batman Movie”) is in negotiations to direct and produce this original pitch from “The Walking Dead” author Robert Kirkman with Ryan Ridley (“Rick and Morty”) penning the script.
The story will center around the character R.M. Renfield, an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but is actually a servant of the Transylvanian vampire Count Dracula.
Dwight Frye, Tom Waits, Peter MacNicol, Mark Gatiss, Klaus Kinski, Nonso Anozie and Samuel Barnett have all previously played the role on screen.
Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst produce.
The project is one of two Dracula-adjacent projects in the works based on elements from Stoker’s novel. The other is the long-gestating “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” which recently cast Corey Hawkins in the lead role.
