The highly popular battle royale game “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds,” better known as PUBG in many circles, is about to undergo a big transition.
The game is getting a title change and is now the somewhat redundant “PUBG: Battlegrounds” which allows them to use the PUBG brand in other ways like the new mobile game “PUBG: New State”.
In addition, the horror game “The Callisto Protocol,” a horror game from the creators of “Dead Space,” has been confirmed as being connected to the franchise but hasn’t been given prefix as yet.
Meanwhile PlayerIGN reports that the game is going free-to-play for a week to mark the title’s collaboration with K-pop megastars Blackpink. That free week will run from August 10th-16th.
The site indicates that publisher Krafton may be using that week to test the waters and “gauge player responses” before potentially making the game permanently free-to-play with a reliance on microtransactions.
PUBG’s main rivals in the battle royale space include “Fortnite,” “Apex Legends” and “Call of Duty: Warzone”.
