Waititi Offers “Akira,” “Star Wars” Updates

Having wrapped both Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Love and Thunder” and the smaller “Next Goal Wins,” director Taika Waititi isn’t resting on his laurels and has multiple projects on the way.

Waititi is everywhere right now. Along with starring as the villain in this week’s “Free Guy” and having done a cameo in last week’s “The Suicide Squad,” he executive produced the series “Reservation Dogs” which launched this week along with the upcoming third season of “What We Do in the Shadows” in early September.

He will soon be seen playing Blackbeard in the comedy series “Our Flag Means Death,” is set to direct the pilot for a “Time Bandits” series, has two animated series of Roald Dahl stories planned for Netflix, and is developing both a new “Star Wars” and a new “Flash Gordon” film along with the long-in-the-works live-action “Akira” movie.

Speaking with Wired, offered updates on where things stand with two of those future projects. Post-“Thor,” his attention has reportedly turned toward his “Star Wars” film but it’s still very early:

“It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage. But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me. I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films. I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’”
