33-year-old Australian indigenous actor Mark Coles Smith (“Last Cab to Darwin”) has reportedly landed the lead role in the third season of ABC & Acorn TV’s “Mystery Road”.

Smith will play a younger version of troubled Aboriginal police detective Jay Swann, the iconic Australian character Aaron Pedersen played across Ivan Sen’s two films “Mystery Road” and “Goldstone” along with the first two seasons of the series.

“Mystery Road: Origin” will begin production in and around Kalgoorlie later this year with plans for upcoming First Nations filmmakers to tackle the run. Plot specifics are under wraps.

Dylan Rivers, son of “Sweet Country” helmer Warwick Thornton, is taking the director’s chair while Tyson Perkins (nephew of actress Rachel Perkins) is lensing the series.
