Amazon has closed its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM which was first announced last May. Amazon and MGM have jointly announced the news in a press release this morning with MGM officially joining Prime Video and Amazon Studios.
The storied, nearly century-old studio will complement Prime Video and Amazon Studios’ work. Together, the teams will provide more quality entertainment options for viewers.
MGM has a catalog of more than 4,000 film titles, 17,000 TV episodes, 180 Academy Awards, and 100 Emmy Awards along with major franchises including James Bond, The Pink Panther, Rocky and more. The library is expected to complement Prime Video and Amazon Studios’ work.
Their film catalogue includes classics like “Basic Instinct,” “Silence of the Lambs,” “Poltergeist,” “Stargate,” “Robocop,” “The Thomas Crown Affair,” “Raging Bull,” “Thelma and Louise” and more. The completion of the transaction comes days after the deal received clearance from the EU’s antitrust regulator.
How soon and how much of that back catalogue will be added to Prime Video in the coming weeks and months isn’t clear as yet.
