IMAX Planning More Live Events

Movies and concerts aren’t enough anymore for IMAX with CEO Rich Gelfold revealing that the giant screen chain hopes to have 200 screens wired for live events by year’s end.

That would be up from 79 currently as IMAX is set to experiment with ticket pricing and other types of content. He adds that the hope is to build out another 500 or more “over time”.

Though initially gravitating towards music events like the recent sold-out live stream of Kanye West’s Donda 2 event in Miami and a special event with Halsey, IMAX is said to be also exploring stand-up comedy, live sports and e-sport tournaments as it puts together a slate deal which will likely consist of one major event and several smaller ones per quarter.

The news comes as, with help from the likes of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Dune,” IMAX had global box office of $277 million during the latest quarter – beating the pre-pandemic Q4 2019 level of $244.46 million.
